found this article sounds like .525 or thereabouts is the ultimate limit for these heads. Right at the limit on either the 8802 or the 8801.

Notice that the RPM operation for the 8802 is 1800 to 6300. Is that the range you're looking for?

Nice thing about a higher stall converter is that you get further up the RPM range to start off when you put the pedal down. In the 700r4 the gearing is better than the TH400 or TH350 in first gear with a sizable jump to 2nd gear. So starting out should be pretty good depending on what your rear gearing is. Even with a 3.08 it still would be better than the old three speeds.

The RPM intake also shifts the performance to a higher RPM. Headers are definitely a must IMO. So a guy has to decide where he wants the performance focused. Low, mid or high RPM.

You can get the best of all worlds or at least a good compromise if you have the right parts and CR. That's not what we have here. So it's gonna be a lesser compromise.

ghetto grind? is that where you touch the tops of the valve guides with a makita grinder until you take about .050 off them? another ghetto version. leave the exhaust seals out. not needed. no engine vacuum on exhaust side.

Key factors are the specific spring and dimension of bottom of retainer and ensuring OE seals are actually pushed down into correct (e.g. blueprint) OE position.

following linked thread is widely recognized as perhaps the most comprehensive guide to understanding iron sbc Vortec heads. It's a LOOONG read; there is some outdated info, some goofs and some genuine jewels within.

https://nastyz28.com/threads/vortec-...e-guide.56505/

Also, it's prudent to recognize how the car magazines, car TV shows and the car parts manufacturers are in league to SELL PARTS/PRODUCT; nothing nefarious but simply business.

The Motortrend article referenced above is from nearly 20 years ago; things change, myths unwind & newer methods & knowledge occurred since.

Humans: be they inner city thugs, dirt farming rednecks, accounting pros or bona fide engineers; All will find a quicker, faster or cheaper way to skin a cat.
