1968 327 350hp. For the 327 there are two different gaskets. One with the thick front section and one with a thin front section. Besides measuring, how do I know which one to use?
^^^this^^^ .... only one way to be certain ... measure as above
old OE pans have the thin gap .... new OE pans the wide gap ... with exception of new reproduction pans, virtually All new pans have the wide gap.
IIRC, about one-piece all-rubber retrofit gaskets (huge improvement) is that fel pro OS34509T fits the older thin pans and OS34510T fits pans w/ wide gap.
FWIW, Both my '71 base L48 had the older, thin gap OE pans. Again, cannot KNOW without measuring.

I agree. Use the One piece gasket. While you are there, consider changing out the rear main seal if old or suspect. You are more than halfway there with the pan off. Jerry

Thanks... I did the rear main seal and the front seal last year. I did do the pan gasket also. I am second guessing myself as to which gasket I installed. There is a small leak at the front of the pan. I did use a Fel-Pro.
So,,,,,, I measured the front of the oil pan. It is 2 5/16. . I can see if you install the gasket that is to thin, it will leak,,,, but if you install the thick gasket when it should be thin, shouldn't it seal? I even hammered the wings of the pan to make them straight.
After measuring again it is just a smig over 2 1/4. I believe the pan is an original thin seal pan. The Fel-Pro gasket is a thin 34509T. I think the gasket is reusable. For $27 I ordered a new one.
OS34509T ... and DO gently peen flat those dimples around oil pan's bolt-holes (but don't split/crack those rails) ... it matters.
get everything that's not metal cleaned away from pan, TCover, Mcap... razor blade-toothbrush.... every bit ... followed by acetone/lacquer thinner ... it matters.
If ANY oil ... gasket will slide on it BAD and can't properly seat and won't seal .... clean clean ... it matters.
don't over-do it w/ RTV ... follow the gasket package instructions ... it matters. g'luck
Thank you. I will cleaning it up very well. A new seal will be here wednesday. Repaint it, to make it purdy. Peening the bolt holes. Best to do it from the pan side on a flat cement floor or the seal side?
I received the new 34509 T gasket. The thin gasket for the early oil pan. I tried to dry fit it on the oil pan on the bench. The front part does not fit snug against the arch. I think after all this it needs the thick gasket. See video. Maybe I am crazy!
And when I check the rear gasket surface, the gasket seems too big. Pushed tight.
Thanks,,,,, I got frustrated and just installed the gasket. Made sure to use RTV on the corners and I also used some on the rear cap and front timing cover part of the gasket.

OK hope it seals well. I put a small dab of RTV only at the 4 corners; none at either TC or Cap.
