Default 77 corvette T&T steering column assembly help

Hi I have a 77 that I have had a lot of issues with my steering column.
i think I finally got everything repaired but have an issue with reassembly.
there is a black metal part that I have no idea where it goes.
i have the assembly manual but it does not show it anyplace.
many help would be appreciated

Here is as far as my depiction shows.

I think it has something to do with the headlight dinmer

Here is the metal piece

Here is the column waiting for reassembly

It is a clip to hold on the plastic piece behind the turn signal lever that the tilt lever goes through. I can’t remember how exactly it goes in, but I do remember cussing at it (along with a lot of other parts in that project). Take a look at that plastic piece and you should be able to see how it goes together.

GM called that part a shield, it is 1977 only along with a few other one year only parts from that experiment.....
Parts Catalog has it numbered #77.
1977 Service Manual has it numbered #68.

It’s a tilt lever shield. It appeared to me to be only cosmetic - it kinda covers up some of the tilt lever opening so you couldn’t see a lot of the column guts.

I considered leaving it out several times, because it’s a balancing act to get the dimmer/turn lever slider in place along with that shield while sliding the column halves together. Eventually I got it. Just takes patience.

Both my 77 column never had that shield . They both work fine without it.
I'm not going to even bother to look for one as well.
Thanks for posting that info.

Thank for all of the assistance on where the shield goes.
while I was assembling the steering column I noticed I misplaced the signal switch arm (the diagram says it is only for a 77 and have not been able to locate it online.

Number #83 calls out Gr.2.895
Once you get to the parts page of Gr.2.895 you would see this...

It says from 77-82 but this item was used until the early 2000 on many of GM cars
It may still be available from the dealer?
GM #7827038
E-bay is another source...

This was EBay Australia. That's what we put up with all the time. Ridiculous asking prices .

Just glad he got one at a reasonable price

Very cool. Glad you located one I was sure you’d have to find a used one - those damn one-year-only 77 unobtanium column parts are a real headache. I’ve been searching for a lower shroud for mine (PO ripped out the key release lever and half the shroud) for years. I don’t ever expect to find one.
