Default Turn Signal Challenges

Hey CF,

Running into some issues with the turn signal on my 79. Currently both rear lights work as well as the front runner lights. Rear lights both illuminate with the brake pressed. With the turn signal turned to the right, everything operates as expected, including the turn light in the gauge cluster, and the clicker in the turn signal relay. When pulling the turn signal to the left, the rear light just stays fully illuminated. The dash arrow doesn't illuminate, no clicks, and no flashing in the front light either.

Any working hypothesis' to share?

Thanks!

Any LEDs bulbs in the car? If not, look for a missing ground, poor bulb connection, failed bulb, or failed socket. For a start.

Check that the front left 1157 bulb is good and installed correctly then attach a wire to a good ground and touch the other end to the brass and see if that does anything.

Default Had this on my 78

Chased this for a long time. On mine the rear tail light sockets have a ground wire that contains a mechanical slip fit connection INSIDE the socket. A rubber bushing is supposed to make this weather tight but mine were old and hard and the connection corroded. Replaced both sockets and now everything is as from the factory. The electrical troubleshooting manual from GM has been invaluable in chasing my many electrical issues

Do not trust any connection that "LOOKS" good. Even if it looks like metal to metal contact, corrosion can be stopping electrical flow.

Does the hazard lights work correctly? If they do it's the switch.

If indeed all four corners are evenly a bright intensity the flasher is bad. Its easy enough to remove the flasher and install an amp meter in series in the socket to verify the current draw is a little less on the left over the right side and the flasher ( a low current circuit breaker} is stubborn to open. Or you can just swap it out. If it is bad I'd recommend an EL-12 electronic flasher relay as the timing and audible sound are better than old 552's.

After some additional digging, I’ve confirmed:

- Hazards illuminate all 4 lights but no flashing
- correct 1157 bulbs are installed and done so properly infact, it was impossible to install them backwards because of the tang positions
- both front side marker lights don’t work

I’ve orders new light sockets. The rear wiring harness is the only old electrical harnesses in the car. So it will probably be wise to get new ones in there.

Can turn signal switch stop working for one side only?

Hazard lights come on but wont flash. Try switching flasher cans from one to the other. As in if all are lighting up but not flashing could very well be a bad flasher can

Two. Can one side only be out on your turn signals. Heck yes! one bad contact in your turn signal switch. (inside your column) can certainly make one side not work.
Switching flasher cans over is a good start. if the can that makes your right signals flash fail to flash all 4 you know you have a wiring problem. If now they all flash. Back to one bad contact in your signal switch. As per both front side markers not flashing. I wish I was there with a test light. Do they light up as marker lights?

Kudos to GordonR. I had already swapped the hazard relay for a new one a week ago. After swapping around and doing some Google searching, I decided to go pick up a couple EL-12 relays from O’Reily’s and this did the trick. The other relay I had purchased was a 10 amp relay with capacity for 6 lamps. The 20 amp relays were strong enough to cover everything. Working blinkers and hazard lights now🤘🏼
