Anyone else ever experience this? Brand new KYB Gas-A-Just shocks, literally right out of the box, spewed oil out when I jacked up the control arm.
Trying to figure out if I did something wrong here, but really, what’s to screw up bolting on a rear shock?
Sorry for the sideways pics, not sure why, they are fine in my phone.
Just exchange it KYBs oughta be good for the life of the car
One has an 8 yr old set, the other 20 and are dry as a bone.
Maybe quality isnt the same as they were? Mine are the white ones, see most today being sold are grey?
Heard back from KYB customer service. Apparently minor leakage is normal but excessive is not.
oookaaay, so what is minor? Mine puked about a shot glass full.
Also, according to KYB,
“If shocks were installed with vehicle suspension hanging all the way down, the full weight of the vehicle chassis on older classic cars will damage the upper shock seal causing leakage.”
Trying to wrap my head around that one. So how exactly does one prevent the suspension from hanging all the way down when you jack up the car at the factory locations?
If your shocks damage that easily on classic cars, why even offer them for classic cars?
I know, for gullible people like me that bank on a companies reputation.
All 4 shocks might be on their way back to Rock Auto, haven’t decided yet.
I’d send them back. A little bit of leaking with a gas shock is not at all acceptable. The gas is always leaking out. They are a sealed unit and you should see no oil at all. I had a set for 10 years that was dry as a bone and jacked it up many times bottoming it out. I think you are being fed a line of BS on this.

Yep... Line of bullshit and shitty quality control. They have a problem and don't want to acknowledge it. Call their bluff. Take a looksee and see where the POS is made at. I suspect some far off communist land. Even if it's not made there it's a POS.

agree.. or MX like Bilsteins went..in fact i was so t'd off with the latest purchase from Bilstein i almost went KYB thinking USA.. but maybe they are not either.
raw materials are rough everywhere , even an o ring or plastics..but imagine outside USA controlling..
I do know they make parts in a lot of places and quite a few in Indiana ...
the only oil i would expect is a faint film on the chrome shaft.
pics adjusted
I have them on my 77 and after making contact with KYB and reading negative views i would not buy them! I was looking for a bushing that was twisted the feed back was terrible from there staff.
KYB’s ten years ago. RR started leaking after one year; LR leaking at two years. Both were replaced with KYB’s and haven’t leaked since. All these shocks were completely dry on installation. If a puddle of fluids leaks onto the floor you need a new shock. 8 years now with the same KYB’s. Other car got Bilstien’s and are working well after ten years. I remember reading about a bracing tool Chevy dealers had to prevent overextension when raising the rear by the frame; alas, on searching today I could not find a reference. I always just let the wheel hang when jacking up; these cars seem to need that often!

Agree, this is bologna and weak sauce. If it can't take full extension of suspension how long is it going to last on the car. Get some other brand.
