Default Plastic oil line

While tracing out some bubba wiring on my '69 bb, I bumped the plastic tubing from the oil pressure sending unit to the gauge. Of course, it snapped like a pretzel. I'd replaced this line/tube 15+ yrs ago and I know it's a pain in the butt to get to the back of the pressure gauge.
So, is there any better material that will last longer with the high temp under my hood??
I've seen black and clear.
Is this considered 1/8" tube?

IIRC, the connection to the guage is something 'peculiar'. Be very careful cobbling up your own. DAMHIKT.

using copper is a pain to run.
should have a couple coils in the line near the fitting to deal with vib and engine rock.

I just posted this on another thread

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/aaf-all46110-60

I like this because it easy to use and it flexes easy....but you need to make sure you retain the fitting on the back of the stock oil pressure gauge. If you want to use copper buy a kit from a corvette supplier because the auto parts stores UNIVERSAL kits will not have the right fitting for a corvette gauge....I went through all this crap when my line popped and filled the passenger compartment foot well with oil on my maiden cruise

RR, can you share the link you mentioned above?
Did you have to buy additional fittings? I've seen similar hoses with a 90* fitting on one end.
Did the 60" length seem about right? I see similar hoses in many different lengths.
Thanks for the help.

I used Braided line when the motor was rebuilt. You need an adaptor for the back of the gauge. I forgot who sold the adaptor.

I forget the fittings. That line I blelieve is N-4 so you need adapters for that and the block which is small. You may have to talk to a tech at summit. I got all the info from a thread here on the forum. I'll look later tonnight

I would use the SS Braided lines as the first choice. Especially if you have higher than normal oil pressure. The SS braided line has held up really well in the past 25 years.

The idea of 200* oil pouring out of the dashboard while driving would be ugly. I still can't believe they used nylon tubing with oil pressure.

Kind of like having an ammeter with exposed shunt on it in a dashboard full of wires. Why couldn't they put in an external shunt? Then we could simply change it as needed when we up-size our alternators. I feel better with a Marine style Circuit breaker right at the battery allowing me instant protection. When I leave the car I can disable it with the push of a button.

The strange thing is when i replaced my original plastic line 2 years ago i could bend it and literally tie it in a knot and it would not snap or crack or break. 49 years old at the time and still very flexible.

Even the part in the engine compartment??
Everything under my hood is 180*+ after a good run, which probably cooked the plastic tubing. Maybe the oem GM tubing was superior??

I think I will go the braided ss line route.
Once I pull out the old line, I can figure out the length needed and the fittings/adapters to hook it up.
Due to the hot rod/racing culture here in So. Cal., there are numerous shops that custom make any type of hose.
I think this will be the easiest.
Thanks everyone for their input.

Was that line with the grommet custom made or did you find a pre-made line with the grommet already installed?

Exactly what I did for my BBC. I split the grommet and put that around the line. I also used a short 6" line from the block to a bulkhead fitting mounted to the left head so the disconnect point is easy to access.

Premade. i think i got it from Jegs #41057. you get the 36" 4AN line - which is longer than you need - and a few fittings. the same set up in 3AN would probably be better. The line is 36" and you only need 20"-24".

Locally there is a dirt track parts supplier. He typically has in stock -3 line with any number of lengths and end fittings. Speedway has a good selection.

I appreciate all the info on stainless braided hose for oil pressure gauges, but it raised a few questions:

1) Does it really matter if you go with 4N or 3N as long as you can find the proper fittings?

2) Is one inner hose material (teflon, synthetic rubber, natural rubber) better than the others for this application?

3) 1/16" fitting for the back of the gauge correct?

Presently researching products at various suppliers.

Thanks,
Paul

Probably does not matter whether you use 3AN or 4 AN. 3AN is smaller and less bulky. as far as the the fitting on the back of the gauge what i did was cut off the threads where the plastic oil line connects to the fitting then drill it for the proper size hole to tap for a 1/16npt fitting. i ended up tapping it until the tap bottomed out in the fitting then cut 1/4" off the end of the tap and continued tapping it until the 1/16npt - 4AN fitting fit correctly then i used JB weld on the threads and screwed it in. i have this set up ready to go if my plastic oil line ever gives me any more problems.
