I think it depends on what tire type you are running. Modern radials are generally 30-34psi. If you are using repro bias-ply they had lower pressures like 24 psi.
It's a trade-off no matter what: higher pressure gives higher gas mileage but harsher ride; lower pressure is opposite. You will wear the tires more on the outside edges with low pressure and in the center with higher pressures.

Running a radial at 24 psi will likely show more rapid outside tread wear whereas 40 psi will likely show rapid center tread wear.
Proper pressure depends on the tire design and pressures recommended by the manufacturer. My Tacoma runs at 40-44 psi from the dealership service and tire sidewall - but that's a completely different design and intended service. My Corvette radials sit right around 30 psi.
