Default Rust questions

Ok, I am in the middle of a frame off resto on my '81 and I see everyone talking about the "birdcage" rusting. Can someone please explain to me what and where exactly this birdcage is? Also what are some of the "hot" spots to look for rust. My frame is bent so it will be replaced but I need to know where to look on the body for rust other than the obvious (floors and lower firewall). Thanks in advance and here is the latest pic of my mess. :smash:

Lason, be sure to check your rocker channels as well. Mine were totally toasted in the area of the body mounts, particularly the ones right in front of the hinge pillars. The rocker channels are the lowest portion of the "birdcage" and in my opinion are the most likely to rustout. GM even put some foam seals in that area that didn't do much more than trap moisture and road grime. Good luck with your project!

Don't forget to check out my mess under - corvette stuff - 75 pictures
Pictures in the 70 section show a relatively 'good' bircage - but still in need of cleanup.
