Is there any information on converting the Cross Fire Injection set up on the L83 350 engine in a 1982 Corvette. I was thinking about a Demon set up on this particular engine. Any information is appreciated
At risk of being attacked for expressing opinions that may in some way disparage the Crossfire system, couldn't you just replace the intake manifold and add a Sniper EFI TBI and a 4-wire HEI distributor? Still a lot of work to do, to be sure.
Or you could throw any old carb on there. Either way, you'll have to do something about the in-tank fuel pump and fuel pressure.
Does your car work as it is? Unless you change the heads, the cam, and the compression ratio, and the exhaust, I doubt you could even match the stock performance of the Crossfire-equipped engine, so you may want to consider an SBC crate engine instead.
My two cents, not based on having done this to a Crossfire engine...
I was am curious with this type of swap. I don’t have an ‘82. It would something I’d like to see or do. If dropping in a crate engine is easier, then I’d opt to do that. If you want to change the fuel injector system on the L83 and then have to change parts A, B and C, well then you’re opening up a can of worms
You already have the fuel injection pump support sub-systems. Update with a proper capacity pump and rated hoses and you're ahead of everybody else converting from a carb. I actually modified a 1982 Pump sending unit to fit into my 68--- I wanted to come out of the top of the tank it was a great option.
You pretty much pick and choose the efi system you want since you're ahead of everybody converting from a carb.
VINS -- you'll need to change the intake, distributor (current one is ECU controlled) and also buy an aftermarket trans lock up kit (also ECU controlled), the fuel pump (also ECU controlled) could be used if rewired but would have to be regulated down to whatever the carb you choose will like OR if you choose to bypass it, you'll have to change the cam as it doesn't have a fuel pump cam lobe to work a mechanical fuel pump which the L83 block does still have.
If someone brought me one now and wanted it converted......here is the parts I would use:
1) 0-90670 Holley Truck Avenger carb
2) 2101 Edelbrock Performer intake
3) Fel Pro 1204 intake gaskets
4) ARP 434-2001 intake bolt kit
5) 93440806 GM HEI distributor
6) 12-803BP Bypass regulator
7) Assorted -6 AN fittings and hose.
8) 376700 TCI trans and throttle bracket.
I would also run long tube headers and a real exhaust system on it........2.5" with your choice of muffler.
When tuned properly with these parts....it will knock over 1 second off the 1/4 mile time.....about 60 horsepower to the tire.
The CFI setup is a pretty damn good reliable setup in reality but the intake is terrible and costs an honest 30 horsepower by itself......
One of our members here (Buccaneer) made bad *** intake for them but they are out of production now (The Renegade intake).
An 82 CFI car will crack the 14 second barrier with these mods.....no joke.
I own an 82' Z/28 ex-CFI car with the stock 305 converted to carb with headers and it runs 15.30's.....with a **** 3 speed trans and 3.23 gear....this is two seconds faster than stock in the 1/4 mile. Short of the rocker arms...there are zero mods done to the engine.
I am also not so sure on the cam not having a fuel pump lobe on it......mine did.....but it is an L-69 style cam.....I am not sure on the L83.
