I’m running a 406 SBC w/Holley 770 Street Avenger Carb, Edelbrock Air Gap Intake, Holley 110 Gph fuel pump. I have the return line capped off due to the fuel pump itself not having one. Seems like it always runs rich & drinks a lot of gas so I’m wondering if I’m forcing it to drink from a fire hose. Fuel pressure ranges from 6.5-7psi @ idle.
Question is if I should have a return line - perhaps spliced in between the fuel filter and fuel pressure gage or before filter?
i believe the pump with return line had a regulator of sorts built in to it. you can't just add a return to the feed line. you would need a regulator with a return.

You may not need one. I don't have one and the engine runs just fine without it. I also have the same Holley fuel pump and Holley double pumper with mechanical secondaries. If the engine runs good and isn't hard to start in hot weather, you don't need it. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
I think if you're dead heading the fuel into the carb @ 6.5-7 psi there it is likely it could push the needle off it's seat and cause flooding. A fuel pressure regulator is the way to manage this.
If you want a return line and an easy way to do it you can replace your current fuel filter with one of these that has a return line built in.
