Re: Do BBC Corvettes still handle well? (garagedweller2)
Yes!
With headers and aluminum heads, and aluminum intake manifold the weight difference and balance of my L88 is within 30 pounds of my original L46 small block. That said, it is harder to drive a BB well on a road course due to its much greater torque. The back end tends to come around very easily!

Chuck
Or, to put it another way Chuck, once you get over the selfish attitude of always having to win you can have a great time out there steering with the "rear" wheels. Sorta like a legal acid-trip.
Re: Do BBC Corvettes still handle well? (garagedweller2)
Does the extra weight of a IRON big block screw up the handling THAT badly?
The answer kinda depends on the car and setup. Most stock big block vettes handle pretty bad when comparing them to modern cars, now in comparison to other muscle cars of the time I'd have to think they still held there own plus some in this department. Now having said that, I'd have to think that the L-88 and ZR-2 vettes would handle with almost any of the smallblock vettes of their day,the ZR-1 (LT-1 with performance package)probably being, better then both and a smallblock as the exception. Now another thing to keep in mind is that the big block in a vette doesn't throw off the weight balance as much as say a big block chevelle where some of the engine is over the front tires, in a vette the big block is still all behind the front tires, more admidships so the weight isn't shifted as far forward. Now with the proper suspension, tire and wheel setup plus a diet, They can be made to run with almost anything. Now the real problem with driving a Rat vette on a tight course is coming off a slow corner, you do have to be carefull in how you ease back into the throttle or you may be heading back the way you came real fast, although this is fun it doesn't help your time any
I changed from a sb to a BB and the steering is totally different. Lots of weight on the front tires when steering. I had also changed out the front springs to BB springs and p/steering. I used to fly around curves with 1 finger steering and relaxed. I used to be smooth around the corners and now it's all these little jerky movements. Drives me stupid. NOW I have to concentrate like crazy. The back end wants to be the front end. I won't drive this car if I'm tired.
Went autocrossing once last year, and I am sorry that I embarrased the Vette ownership clan. I have a ZR-1 and have only replaced the front springs, the shocks and rear spring are still original. I floundered like a fish out of water, now I do have @ 490 hp but not the bb torque, and in hindsight I should have started in reverse facing the wrong way as the **** end wanted to lead my little parade anyway. Couldn't imagine what I would have done with a bb. Those little Honda's etc could sure fly around that course though.
