My evaporator housing has a hole in it on its side that I'm guessing doesn't belong there. When I first saw it, I could only see the jagged bottom but when I looked closer the top looks rectangular like it's a factory-made shape. Does anyone know one way or the other? Unless something is supposed to go there, I'm just going to glass it in.

Note: I've also seen that others here have used adhesive backed aluminized heat barrier that they put over this area which would cover that small hole which I'm guessing would be sufficient?

That's what I did. To do it right, you'd have to take the box off the firewall and patch from the inside. Then you might find the nest of the mouse that made that hole (if that's what happened).
In the meantime, aluminized tape works fine. You can paint it, or put some black Gorilla tape over it, to make it less obvious.
If you can do fiberglassing, which apparently you can based on your post, that will work great. Mine had a similar issue and that's what I did. A lot of work but worth it. But you definitely need to patch that hole as it will very negatively affect a/c performance.
