On a vette, what do you guys recommend for pulling the engine? Put the front of the car on stands or ramps or put the entire car on stands. Is it best to keep the car in the air for the entire eng removal or just until everything is disconnected. Also where is the best location for stands to be placed. Thanks for any help.
In that case you really only need to raise the front to get under there and disconnect everything. once everything is disconnected its not a problem to leave it on stands so long as your hoist will lift high enough. When I place my front on stands I put them under the lower controll arms.
Put the front of the car on stands. If you can try to pull it out having the engine picker infront of the car, so you can pull the engine off the tranny more easily. :yesnod:
Stands in the front make it a whole lot easier, that way you can take off the front tires and lower the front end down much lower when you actually "lift" the engine over the fender.
Had to remove mine from the right side. Raised front of vehicle, placed jackstands underneath the control arms, and removed the right side tire.
This was done in a small one car garage.
I hate to hijack this thread, but what is the recommended routine when pulling the motor and (auto) tranny? Keep them together or seperate? What about putting them back in? Thanks, Joe
I installed, removed and installed my LS1 and T56 six speed (about the same size as a big auto) all at once from the side. I jacked up the front, put it on stands and removed the left front wheel.
I am just about to do an engine swap, I want to remove the trany as well to get it rebuilt, my car is a 1970 4 speed manual. Will the engine and trany come out together with a fixed coss member or can you only do it with a removable cross members. I want to do what is the most straight forward as I am a novice at this.
Thanks Mark........
The engine and tranny will most definately come out together. I originally had a 4 speed car and was able to get that 6speed in there with the crossmember still in place.
