Getting ready to swap out my engine/trans and decided to get a new serp/cog belt setup. I have a cog setup on my current setup, but had to do a lot of shimming/etc. I bought a new short/corvette water pump but thinking I should get a long water pump so I have more conversion kit options. Only concern is will I have issues with the fan clearance or anything else if i go that route? The engine is a crate 350 SB and doing everything new so.....or can I/should just stack a few shims behind the pulley?
I have a 77 Corvette as well. So I was all set to try to answer your question.
You lost me with the totally not C3 Corvette serpentine drive setup.
Long pump, mechanical fan, should only push fan forward a tad. Should work. But why?
V belts have suddenly become unreliable?
If you still need 2 belts and your not even running air-con, I guess I miss the point.
if you go with new non corvette pulleys, theres no reason I think you need a special water pump I went with a standard aluminum water pump (short I believe) and billet v belt pulleys on my 74, I did have to use a couple spacer shims to get my AC and alternator pulleys to line up but if your going with a serpentine all that will be different anyway.

I would assume for that same reason some have gone to hei distributors from points or to fuel injection, electric fans or even LS engine swaps... serpentine belt systems are more reliable and have more contact surface area with less slip... This is why v belts are only found on classics with the old mechanical fans.
I'm poking around under my hood enough where the v belts are checked and retentioned so I havent had the motivation to change them myself but I also like my ole carb setup.... to each their own, many of us find ways to make our cars our own, necessary or not.
OP, if your going to do this I suggest going all out and looking at electric fan upgrades as well makes the fan concerns a moot point.

never had the original pulleys so bought a 1" COG drive 20 years ago. problem was that I had to shim everything and the alum pulley on alternator eventually rounded out the shaft hole. So, I figure I would just go all new that try to screw around with the fix/etc....
Might upgrade to electric fans later, but for now, just want to get the thing on the road...
