Has anyone removed the add on metal strip on 72 bumperettes? Or know for sure how the strips were added during manufacturing. There’s one tack weld on each one and attached by some other process like silver solder or fussing process.
Yep I have both a set of 69s bumperettes which were on my 72 car, and left a little gap, and a set of 72 bumperettes with that lip. My "lip" is painted a sort of argent grey. To better match the bottom edge of the grills. Mine look pretty original as to color. Can I assume they were chromed and then painted on top? Or maybe some kind of mask was used when they were chromed? I can not believe that piece was welded on after they were chromed.
I am not sure why you would want to take it off, just get the right ones. Removing a weld will probably mean re-chroming. 1969 style bumperettes without extra lip

Leigh1322 is correct, 68-69 bumperettes do not have the metal strip attached. 70-72 have the metal strip that blends into the new design of the grill to become part of the grill design. Looking at the bumperettes they are chrome plated with the metal strip attached and then masked off and painted a color to match the grill of the 70-72
Look at the left side of this 72 grille (from BAT) and you can see the lip, and how it blends in with the bottom edge of the grille, in both size, shape & color.

I just had a look at a rusted set of 1971s in my parts pile and they look exactly the same as your 1972s with the welded metal strips. The metal strips are painted black as well…
