To make a long and frustrating story short, the machine shop I used went through a series of missteps along the way with regard to this engine block ... Despite being instructed to bore all cylinders to .040 to match my rotating assembly, they bored to .060,...
ZL1,
Given this machine shop's performance on things YOUKNOW ABOUT, how do think they did on the other stuff?
I would not use that block on anything that needed to run.

It's a giant hunk of heavy cast iron, and most of it is really in plain site - I can check the deck for height and straightness, as well as the bores to make sure they are consistent and true. Assuming that all looks good, I'll very likely end up taking it to another machine shop and pay 'em a couple-hundred bucks or so to have them magnaflux again to be sure, hot tank it, and put in new freeze plugs. From that perspective, there should be no issues. My primary concern was the deck damage. The block itself had about 1000 miles on it since its last rebuild about 15 years ago, and it was magnafluxed at that time.

My concern would be, did they get cylinders bored exactly 90 degrees perpendicular to your crankshaft. What boring machine did they use? Was it one that mounts to block's top? Not an issue if you know what you are doing, but I don't think these folks have demonstrated that. Machines that mount to block's top can sometimes angle the cylinder bore to the front or back of the block.

When it comes time to rebuild this, I'll have another shop give it a once over to make sure it's worthy of duty.
