Rocker arms
I have been working on my vette for a few months now,and been busy,not to mention too Hott here in SC,but,I keep my car covered,and hadn’t paid much attention to the engine in 2 weeks,but saw yesterday where my new rocker arms has surface rust starting to form,and did pour oil on them a month or so ago.but in this metal building and 100 degree weather not helping,does coating with Vaseline help,to keep from rusting till I get ready to fire it up.

The valve covers are off,and no biggie a soft pad and they wiped right off,but I always keep the top of the engine covered and if I’m not working on it,the car is covered,and hadn’t put any oil on them in a month,and here with the humidity +100.

In answer to the original question. Yes petroleum jelly will work fine.
I've used it many times when assembling Harley engines that I am fairly certain won't be fired for a bit of time.
I use it on main roller bearings and other areas. Never an issue.
