Default Update on search for rebuilding engine.

Okay, so I hit one of the machine shops and this is what I found:

1. He showed me a dyno he did on a similar 350 engine using the same specs as mine, but with an edelbrock performer intake. His results showed 355hp@5500RPM and 387ftbl@4100RPM. Do these numbers look good for the push you back in your seat feeling I'm looking for?

2. The breakdown of his costs are as follows: Rebuild labour $1023 USD which includes (excuse my engine newby wording) - the block cleaned and magnafluxed, heads ported and polished, the pistons will be bored (if that's the correct term), the guides where the crank goes through will be straightened (terminology again), and he will replace all necesarry parts. I'm sure a typical rebuild. If someone wants to be nice and create a checklist for getting an engine rebuilt that would be great help. We could post it in corvettefaq. Anyhow to continue, his parts cost will be $383 USD not including cam and lifters, and intake. He's not sure if we can reuse my cam, as it has a big lope at idle (maybe too oversized or not matched properly with the torque converter, still an unknown). Labour and material for rebuilding the q-jet is $140 USD. And oh yeah, he'll paint the engine to whatever color I want. His cost for R/R and to hook up the carb/wiring correctly (bubba's been under the hood in it's previous life) is $543 USD.

Instead of telling me what he was going to do, he walked me through his shop and showed me all the processes he does. I'd like to feel free to stop in every day to take pictures, so I'll make sure I ask him next time. So what do you guys think? If you want to reply with some tips, I'll put a checklist together for us newby's to help us out.

Sounds good  . I just decided on buying the 470 hp/465tq 383 from AR Racing :D , It'll cost me about $3,500US, and the rest of the parts I can take from original motor, and buy what I don't want to re-use.

Unless there are other problems, you don't need the align hone done. Spend the money on getting the assy correctly balanced. I'd also ensure I understand what he means by "porting & polishing" the heads. A good rebuild on used heads (having to replace guides, valves, and springs) will run you close to $500 alone... A full porting job is very time intensive and @ $50 per hour (cheap shop time) can add up quickly.

JMO YMMV
