Default Temp sender location 427

My 1969 C3 is getting close to going on the road. I found the temp sender wire in the harness by the alternator, but no sending unit. It has headers and I don't see a plug where the sender would go. The (GM) intake has a bung on the front, but it's not drilled and tapped. I'm thinking this is going to be my best bet. I thought about getting a thermostat housing with a fitting, but it won't be accurate until the thermostat is open. I'm also suspecting that housing wouldn't have a large enough hole to fit the correct sending unit. I'm open to all opinions at this time. Thanks!

Sender should be in the cylinder head

Yep, look for it or a hole between the #3 & 5 spark plugs:

Thanks,

I'll triple check after work. I remember them being there, but couldn't see anything. A previous owner installed headers and I haven't switched back yet. I looked on both sides before work with a mirror and flashlight and didn't see any sender or plugs. I'll check again. At least I know where to look now.

The cylinder head most certainly should have a plug there. Now whether or not it is covered up by a header flange from the land of almost right (China) remains to be seen. If its covered by a header flange many aftermarket intake manifolds have a provision in the front water crossover that will work. Thats where it is on my brothers 68 big block car.

It'll be several days, but I'll remove the header and take a better look. Nothing to see with the headers on. I'm ashamed to say, that I've had this car for 22 years and it's finally getting on the road. With that said, the headers have probably been on long before China made and chit headers. It was last registered in 1986, back. At least in California, the only header companies were Hedman, Hooker, Blackjack and Cyclone, at least back then they are all made in "Merica!!

And yes, I looked again, between cylinders 3 & 5, nothing visible and I couldn't feel anything with my fingers. We'll see.

Look on the other head in the same general location. Do you have anything on that side like a sender sticking out? The heads are the same casting, so the port is going to be there too but may likewise be covered by the header flange. While the '69 originally had the sender on the driver side, your engine's last build may have installed it on the passenger side.

Most headers have a 1/2 moon cutout in the flange to clear it. Look directly above #3 spark plug for a pipe plug if no sender.

This should give you an idea of where it is. You can see the brass sender in my cyliner head int he middle of the 3, 5 exhaust port.

Sigforty,

Nice engine! I'm having a hard time believing I can't see it if it's so "close". Will double, double check.

Thanks! If you can post a picture, it could be that someone blocked it off or put on different heads that don't have the port drilled and tapped.

My engine builder told me to put the sender as close to the thermostat as I can. I'm running a Edelbrock Performer intake and there is a threaded port right next to the thermostat housing.
