Default Would it be sacrilegious if I.........

Swapped a 87 Grand National V6 Turbo into my 80?

My thoughts:

1.) Easy to smog (my 80 doesn't now, needs to be rejetted)
2.) Gas milage. Currently I don't have a vehicle that gets over 8mpg city.
3.) Easy modification factor.
4.) The fun of answering the question, "What ya got in that thing?" with "A v6 :D "

Anyone else have any thoughts on this idea?

I think it has been done before, I don't know if it is sacrilegious or not, but with the right mods it should haul buns!

I know it has been done, but the thought just popped into my head for some reason. Always wanted a grand national, but I hate the shoe box look.

Thanks for response!

Sounds like a good project to me. One of my friends has one. It really goes. There is a bumper sticker pinned to his garage wall....."I Brake For Corvettes"

Nice combo. Go for it! JIM

Thanks! Right now I'm just trying to get it restored. Trying to make it safe and look decent before I start worrying about the drivetrain.

Plus I heard that the stock driveline will work behind a 200-4r.

i dunno...a V6??? what if i dropped a honda VTEC I4 into my vette, added a 4 foot carbon fiber wing, lowered it to 3 millimeters off the ground, and threw in a 1500 watt stereo system? :U
i just believe stingrays should only see V8's, but thats my opinion. it's your car do what you want. have fun. and if you add like 20 pounds of boost, it may rock, too :chevy :chevy

It's my understanding from all of the time I've spent on 3rd gen f-body boards and talking to guys with 20th anniversary TTA's that the v6 is good for 30# boost, and the only tools neede to get it is a screwdriver and Crescent wrench!

Look up TurboVette in C4. He did this with an '85 and is running 9.7s at 145+.

I believe a forum member named RogueVette or something like that has one in his c4 and runs 10 second quarter miles. If gas mileage is your objective, it would be alot easier going with an overdrive tranny and a well tuned v8 and the right gearing. I would think you should be getting much better gas mileage.

Well, not all gasmilage. :) Just better than 8mpg. :)

And I want it FAST. I could go a cheap way and stuff the 454 thats sitting on my engine stand in it, but thats not gonna help my gasmilage problem. :)

E* Thanks for the opinions everyone!

Also, I i believe that the v6 turbo in the TTA is the same as the GN, just the TTA is faster due to lighter weight, areodynamics and such.

If you are getting 8 mpg with a stock motored '80, you need a tune-up BADLY.

My '75 got 12 city, 15 hwy stock. With the mods (10:1, RPM heads, XE262 cam, headers, etc {DesktopDyno 2000 says 370HP/400 ftlbs}), I get 12 mpg city and 20 mpg hwy (thanks to the Tremec OD) with a Quadrajet.

BTW: I think the GN motor is a pretty cool swap. Definitely a different approach than all the BB swaps on the Forum. Go for it if you want (it's your car after all) but I bet you will enjoy it so much that it will get 8 mpg. :D

Some how...Corvette and gas milage in the same sentence just doesn't sound right. Think most of "our" cars are beloved "toys" and I know for sure no matter what my gas milage was, I would still have to be driving my vette!

Thanks,
Joe... peace <*)))>< :steering:

Doesn't need a tune up, needs to be rejeted. Won't smog because its at 7000 hydrocarbons. lol

800cfm carb @ 4000ft = BAD BAD BAD. :)

I hate to be the one to throw a wrench in this but, If you have emmisions tests I don't believe this is a legal swap considering the engine was never offered in a vette. Normally the way the swap rules work is that it has to be offered and it has to be of the same vintage or newer. Nevermind the engine you put in may be twice as efficient and get twice the gas mileage, they never seem to care about that. I think it would be a cool swap myself, just keep your original. You may want to wait until you can get antique plates, then you can do basically whatever you want to it and no more smog tests.

I think its any engine "newer" then the model year... cant quote me on that

I'd like to see it happen personally, but a TT v8 would also run like a scalded ape.

I am a fan of the V8 rumble, something you'll never get with a turboed v6. It may be a quick car when you're done though!
