Apologies in advance for typos because I just had my eyes dialated and cant see clearly. I can make out wuite a few red squigly lines under some of my words, so sorry for that...
I am tring to remove my evaporator box to make way for the Vintage Air installation on my 80. I have removed all of the bolts holding the fan/evaporator cover onto the box, but it seems like there are two small rovets at the bottom, firewall side of the box holding everything together, preventing me from removing the side cover. Since I dont need this box, can I just pry and try to pop the rivets, or is there a more "refined" approach to this?
I removed the box on my 80. There were some things that unscrewed from inside. Both halves were sealed to each other, and the firewall. I dont remember having to drill any rivets, but It wouldn't have slowed me down.
I had to separate the two halves to remove them with the engine in place.
there is a tiny little screw at the very bottom. not a rivet. and 1 or 2 from inside if i recall. headers make it harder. sidepipes harder yet. there is a cover you can remove below the ac box makes it easier to get to lower bolts. but the side trim covers some of the screws holds it on. and they can be a PITA to remove.
Well, to put it bluntly, removing the evaporator box was the biggest PIA of the whole disassembly process. You have the two halves of the box, but there is a metal "backing" plate between the box and the firewall. There were some small rivets holding that plate to both halves of the evaporator box. I pried and popped the rivets (they are tiny and there is absolutely no way to get a drill in there) and I cut the AC accumulator hard line close to the box because the fittings were seized and there would be no way to remove the box with the accumulator attached, and there she goes!
I probably should make a thread about my adventures installing my Vintage Air system...
