I have replaced everything that involves the ignition points, plugs, wires cap, rodar, condensor, checked timing many times ,rebuilt carb(lars),distributor recurve. But it still misses any ideas of what to check next would be great. It's a '71 350 base motor, auto. The car misses at wide open throddel miss is coming from the back two barrels. thanks
Two things I'd check 1) A vaccum leak on the intake at the rear two cylinders. Take a can of carb cleaner or WD-40 and, with the car runnung, spray the area where the intake meets the head on both sides. If the RPM goes up, you have a leak and new intake gaskets are in order.
2) Pull the valve covers and check for a broken spring or two. Do this with the engine off. If this is a stock motor those babies are 32 yrs. old! If you do find a broken spring and have never done a valve job on it, well it's winter and it's a good time for jobs like that. P.S. Also wouldn't hurt to install a roller timing chain and gear set, if that's never been done either.
I would also carefully look at the valve train with the valve covers off while cranking the engine. Disconnect the coil wire and watch to make sure that all your rocker arms or moving the same amount. You might be loosing a camshaft.
How did you verify the back two barrels? What is your maximum mechanical advance? How about max spark (can it jump a good sized gap)? Are the plugs evenly colored or are there some odd ones? Can you get it to miss while brake torquing? Just some things to check out, let us know what you find.
Check your coil, I had a miss that seemed to be very non specific, I tried everything you did and still had the miss. After switching wires for a second time I happened to look into the opening in the coil where the wire plugs, and found a great deal of verdigris (copper corrosion) I changed to a different coil and my miss went away.
