Adjust your clutch and try again. It wont come out of gear if the clutch isnt fully disengaged and wont go into others oif its close and the synchros are worn

You arent shifting into reverse under load.
If you are in nuetral it may or may not go into 4rth sitting still. Third is usually a good indicator for a loose clutch as well
What they said and..... If you have a lift, start easy,,,,at the linkages. They can be taken off the trans. Make sure they are not worn and everything is tight. Remove the shifter rods and shift the trans with just the levers. Make sure the levers are secured and tight to the trans. Taking the tunnel off is more difficult, but is required to check the gear shift mechanism.

Our 69 hangs in 1st you have to fight it to get it out then will not go into 4th. Anyone experience this?
thanks in advance
Sounds like the shifter's probably just worn or out of adjustment or both. Had a similar problem plus I wanted to set it up for short throw - meaning that the transmission levers have two holes in them and I relocated the rods to the lower holes. To do that you'll need to disconnect the rods from the transmission and lock the shifter into neutral. There is a tool for that. You could make one out of an old feeler gauge or something, but for me it was easy to just order one of these for a couple of bucks: https://www.zip-corvette.com/64-81-4...ment-tool.html
A long slightly bent pair of hemostats helped a little fiddling got it in. No need to bother the console or anything inside the car. Needed to put the car up on cribs to have enough room to work under there. It can be frustrating and even a very small adjustment makes a difference.
The lever on the transmission farthest forward is 3/4 and the next in line is 1/2. You can easily click them back and forth into gear by hand and feel the very positive neutral right in the middle. The reverse is a single throw lever in the rear. Had the thing positively locked into neutral several times up on cribs but had to test the car with it on the ground with it flexing and so forth. I eventually had to go slightly beyond the factory adjustment to get reverse happy again but not by much - a half turn on a thread can make a difference. Those factory goofy c-clips actually make it easier - cotter pins can be a pain.
Having done this more times up & down off the cribs than I want to admit or ever repeat to get this right I'll say that it was worth it. Shifter is tight and like a rifle bolt now, very positive and much improved. I'd say like an '03 Springfield - my favorite rifle at that.
You can also check the clutch linkage while you are under there. It's not that hard to tighten it up a bit.
Can you use that Zip adjusting tool from underneath?
