I am looking to get the headers and side pipes ceramic coated on my 69 to cut down on under hood temps and reduce the temp of the side pipes. What can everyone recommend
?
First, you might try to find a powder coating shop in your area that can ceramic coat the exhaust, then see what brand they would recommend.
The shops I’ve used in the past use several different brands of powder depending on what the parts are used for.
Next time I have my side pipes off I'm going to try Ceracoat. It's big in the gun industry and they have new coatings that work up to 1800 degrees. Plus they have hundreds of colors.
Ceramic inside and outside seems logical..however i have never truly seen thermocouple comparison for sure..
i would say just like oem..the best way is with air gap shields..
no powder coating, even high heat powder coating will last on headers…sidepipes maybe but only ~4 powder companies make high heat powders.
Cerakote or Jet Hot. Either way, get them coated inside and out. I believe Cerakote costs a little less and is available in more places. I got 2 sets of headers Cerakoted and after 10 yrs. they were both still good.
what frustrates me is no thermocouple..
The emmisitivy is completely different from a very heat transfering black, to a reflective surface.
they have instruments all over that dyno..just compare cast, steel, ceramic..in and out or other..
it really shouldn’t be that hard..

Even without that they could feel the difference. Regardless of emmisivity it’s not gonna be a 500* discrepancy.
I’ve creakoted a bunch of turbo hotsides, NA long tube headers and exhausts and the air dry coating is no joke. My pre turbo hot sides will get a lot hotter than a NA header and it’s been 5-6 years and coatings still look good. The air cure version you can spray yourself and bolt on 24 hours later. You do need to blast or scuff your material before spraying. I do see a noticeable drop in temps coated vs not. 14 oz is like $80 or so and it’s enough to cost a full turbo system and exhaust almost 2 times!
jet hot is not all its cracked up to be, local coater in ‘NJ when I lived there 4 years ago said that 90% of his business is recoating jet hot that fail.
ive heard the swain coating is the best but it only comes in white and it’s thick and textured. I’m not a fan of the looks or the cost but I do hear it’s the best.
I just dropped my long tubes off at swain tech in NY for their "White Lightning" coating.
Swain Tech is about 9 miles from here and i had them do my headers back in the early 90's and they still have no rust on them. i have another set of headers i am going to be bringing them to get coated. once they are coated you can leave them natural or paint them.
