Default Back-up Lights

Hello. On my 69 4sp. I noticed the small rod on the back up light switch had come of on the switch. Clip was missing so I assume that's why. Reconnected it and now I'm trying to get the light to work, as they did before. Not sure if the rod was bent when disconnected, certainly not straight. The best I seem to be able to do by adjusting the switch or bending the rod is to get the lights to come on when about 1/2 way into reverse and the lights not on in neutral. If I adjust things to get them on when fully in reverse the lights are also on in neutral and any gear.
Is it just a matter of trying to find the "perfect spot". Does it matter if the car isn't level,( back up on ramps) or some other trick I'm missing. Thanks and take care

You really need a volt meter to adjust the actual switch. Using the “Continuity” setting attach the meter to the switch unplugged from the light harness. Put the shifter in reverse and then move the switch slight until you get continuity or hear a Buzzer from your meter. There is not a lot of adjustment available and you don’t want the backup lights to work in other gears. I haven’t read where anyone had to bend the rod. I will assume your trans is stock?
