If you've never had sidepipes, I can tell you the sound from the drivers seat is remarkably different than undercar exhaust. Certain lower rpms sound like crap to my ear (might be because you are hearing one pipe way more than the other?).
But boy howdy, do they make a sweet noise when you get sporty with the loud pedal. I have a very mild crate 350 motor in mine, but everyone thinks I have a big block.
The pipes were on the car when i got it and are pretty old, so no idea what brand or inserts they are. I started trying to get the tubes off to play with inserts one day, but quickly abandoned the idea because they are on there pretty good.
Edit: and lots of people will deny it, but the fact is, sidepipes do turn heads and grab attention, if that's your thing. Could be that we are all still 12 years old inside so it secretly appeals to us. lol

Well I am probably 3 of those 2 things.... and more LOL
Yeah performance wise, the huge 1 7/8" collectors on the sidepipes do cost some low-mid range torque and hp and I also find the sound at certain rpms kind of undesirable but I have tried a couple different inserts in my stainless obx pipes and I prefer the vette pack chambered inserts myself. I also will be swapping in an overdrive trans soon which will quiet the pipes a bit on the highway were the sound can get daunting after a while. I think the sidepipes help with heat buildup inside the car. they also help with being able to lower the car a bit.
Overall I do not regret the sidepipes on my car one bit. I recently burned my leg again on a collector while leaning over the fender working on the car. But with heat shields and normal use its really no longer an issue at all for me.
In short the pipes dont matter as they are all clones of the old school hooker pipe design but the inserts chosen do make a difference.
