Default Installing new valve covers - any tips??

Hey Guys!

Any tips or how-to videos for installing new gasket and valve covers? I'm a novice at best, just got a C3 and am learning as I go. Really love teaching myself and being able to work on it.

Below are the ones I'm looking to purchase. Thank in advance.

Buy the good gasket….
and lots of thoughts on studs and longer bolts needed for thicker gaskets..

valve covers of your choice! Like the cast ones for sure

On a good note:
Cast aluminum
Internal Baffles

On a bad note:
Cheap cork gasket
Add another $24 for emblem

All said and done, you will have over $300 in V.C. I like Ecklers, dealt with them several times.
But I think you can do better on pricing.
Even EBay or Amazon might have the same thing w/ emblems. Look around.

Also, get a set of FelPro gaskets with rubber/ cork composite.

and do not overdo the sealer. it will act as a lube and gasket can slip right out (in actually). might be best to apply sealer to the valve covers. put gaskets into covers. let sealer harden. then install to engine.

Do NOT over torque them. Typical torque for the bolts is 5-7 ft-lbs (60-85 in-lbs).

I have used the reusable rubber gaskets with good luck but recently upgraded to the blue neoprene speedway gaskets I bought on ebay and they seal great.
these are what I bought.

I use either fast tack trim adheasive or super weatherstrip adheasive to glue the gaskets to the valve covers. then I am able to remove and install the covers easily with no leaks.

1. Make sure the engine is cool before you start.
2. Use a socket wrench to remove the old valve covers.
3. Lubricate the gaskets on the new valve covers with a light oil.
4. Place the new valve covers over the valves and screw them in place.
5. Make sure they are tight and replace the spark plugs.

Yes. been doing for over 40 years and never had a problem. i have brodix race rite heads on my car which hold about a cup or 2 of oil at the back of the head right up to the gasket and never had a leak or had the gasket unglue itself. one thing i forgot to mention is to dip your finger in oil and put a thin film of oil on the bottom of the gasket so it will not stick to the head. YMMV

These are the gaskets I have had the best success with. They are pricy but last for years, and are reusable, if you remove the valve covers:

https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c...gaskets&pos=19

They include weight spreaders for the bolt holes, but you will not use them with the aluminum valve covers. They have a metal core, so it is difficult to over-tighten them. They are installed with no adhesive. I normally put them on the valve cover, and install the bolts, to help keep them in place, when I set the valve covers on the heads.

What engine do you have? Some engines have a milled/smooth surface on the heads, some have a rough cast iron surface. Makes a difference what gasket you use.

I've used the nice blue gaskets and I have used the parts store thick cork gaskets - glue them to the valve covers and run a layer of oil around the cork on the heads side with your finger when you install them

Both have worked fine and are easy to remove for adjustment
