Looking to have my windshield replaced on my '70 Convertible. The question is do the seals need to be replaced or can they be reused?
Does anyone have a step by step procedure? I am just curious about the process.
have you considered having Safelite or another professional do it?
Actually had a guy who though his guys could do it. He even ordered and received the glass. As per his request I brought the car over for his guys to look at it. They are known to be really good but his foreman said, "Look, we have never done one and we don't want yours to be the subject to our inexperience". I respect that. He recommended I try Safelite also so I put in a request on their site yesterday and so far I have heard crickets so I guess they don't have anyone. I did find a Glass shop who has done them and he will be by on Monday to look at the car. He wants to be sure he doesn't need anything else. He has done them with the Butyl strip and weatherstrip seal and without it. He confirmed what everything I have read is that cleaning the surface of all the old sealer prior to installing it and setting it to the correct height are critical. He specializes in Classic Cars. Fingers crossed.
tell the guy to do it. safelite techs have been doing glass for 1 to 5 years. few of them can tell a corvette from a corvair. they will throw on 1 squirt of urethane and set it too low. they may well tell you they don't do old cars. tell ur guy to pull the glass so you can take it home and clean up and paint and JB Weld up the little holes in the pinchweld. then set it up with 3/8ths damming strip and pre-fit it and take it back to have them put it in. he says he doesn't know how. that means he knows a lot more than the rest of the guys that never did one but think they do know how. or just buy the glass from him and do it yourself.

Well he came to the house to look at the car today. He told me has done lots of these as his father also. They have done lots of studio cars also. They specialize in Classic Cars. He looked at the car and said this was NOT the original and showed me why even though it is an LOF. Says they glued the bottom edge (not the way the factory did it. Also too much caulking mess. It should be clean where the two sections of stainless meet) which means he will need to be very careful with the dash. He comes here with a helper. Nicely equipped service truck. They will remove the old windshield strip all the old butyl and glue. Clean and prime any bare metal. If I have any matching interior paint he will touch up the areas as needed otherwise will properly dress it so it looks proper. He also said he doesn’t use the cheap Offshore glass, only domestic dated glass. Well he will be here Tuesday.
in that case 5/16th damming strip. you are SoCal. that doesn't mean the car always has. there could be corrosion issues under all the extra gloop. plan on doing the removal one day and doing the install once you and he are happy with the condition of the pinchweld. but it sounds like-as i said-he is the correct guy for the job...

Yes, The guy will be here tomorrow. Actually the car has always been in California except when the previous owner moved to Reno 18 months ago. So far we have found no signs of any rust at all which is promising. BTW, this installer did say once he has stripped off all the existing sealant he will put a good coat or two of primer-sealer on the surface so that there is no bare metal prior to setting the new glass in place.
sounds like you are not gonna have to grind out rust and fill pits or holes. i will give you 500 bucks and my 75 for it...
LOL, Thanks but then I'll need to answer to my girl. After all nothing finer than a beautiful blonde in a Blue Convertible Vette! Oh, and she just loves this car!
There’s 10 trim clips across the top rail of the windshield frame. They are a little screws. Number six. Even with a good windshield frame if you take them out and clean and paint it the screw holes can disappear. I would put the screws back in before painting the pinch weld so that you can find the holes to reattach the clips. Replaced eclipse with aftermarket clips. They are taller and hold the windshield trim up higher.

Glass guy is here right now. He just told me he was wrong the other day when he looked at the car and said someone had replaced the windshield. Today he said looking at it now it is definitely the original. He had previous to this never seen one glued in before, always with Butyl. So far he says everything is really solid and no signs of rust!

Windshield is now done and they did a great job. Very happy. Thanks everyone.
