So the mechanic who added my new headers/sidepipes forgot a bolt from the exhaust pipe to the header. It's causing a leak of course. Would this happen by design? I'm bringing this back into the shop to have them fix it. Is this a major issue to drive the vehicle like this?
If all he was doing was Your exhaust, I dont see how he couldve missed that. Maybe the nut wouldnt fit. Or maybe he got lazy. Long term it may warp a bit causing hard to seal leaks. I’d give him a call and see what he says.
No it shouldn't be like that. I would just put a bolt in it instead of driving it to him. If you can get to it to take a picture throw a bolt in it. If you don't have the right size, have him put in the right one.
Honestly he probably put bolts in it. What most likely happened is the nut worked off. I dont see any lock washers.
Personally anytime I do exhaust work of this type I use stainless bolts, flatwashers and either a flange nut with locking teeth or a thread distorting style lock nut. Seems that crap always works loose for me.
The factory used prevailing torque nuts at that location. They hold better in high heat applications. It looks like the flange has witness marks from some fastener being there before. Just gone now.
I predict you will loose more bolts in the near future until you get some prevailing torque nuts on there.
