Early 72 - AC compressor question / issue
Hi together
For a couple of days i had white smoke on my compressor clutch, after I removed the AC connecter, I was able to drive to home without more problems.
I think its the clutch, what do you mean?
Had the early 72 a thermal limiter and super heat switch? I don't find one of these things in my car.
And what was the correct number of compressor in the early 72?
I found follows number on the compressor, I think is a 66 compressor, correct?
AC Compressor:
Modelnumber on the decal: 6550133
Castingnumber: 6555302 D45
Castingdate: G056
Thanks for the help!

6550133 was used on several Chevy models from 1962 till around 1969 but not on a Corvette. The code number is a date code printed in black ink of MMDDYS (where S=shift) would be on its foil label. Yours is the casting date of the case. would equate to July 5th 1966.
6555302 was the compressor head used across all GM lines for many years and models.

That's the way I read it also. Only thing I would check also is the pulley diameter (OD) . If it's about 5 3/4" its a Vette comp. 72 BB had a smaller pulley and the SB had a 5 3/4. 6550133 was a 66 Chevelle foil.

Thanks for the information and help. I will check the pulley diameter today in the evening.
Had anybody information about the early 72 regarding the thermal limiter and super heat switch?
I think the decal is not the first one, when you see the imprint from the older decal and the decal has no series number with the stamp.

The thermal switched was on 72 Vettes that I did compressor restoration on. Not really sure if it was on all 72 models or if it came out mid year or so.

If I have measured correctly is the pulley its 124.03mm, so in inch is 4.883", that's near by a 4.870" pulley.
Or was measurement method incorrect?

Measurement was correct and the BB used the smaller pulley.

Okay, than it’s a complettly inccorect compressor on my 72 C3 SB.
1966, Chevelle decal, BigBlock Pulley etc.
Now I have to ask myself the question rebuild the pulley or just a completely new A6 compressor with the correct codes. It‘s hard to find one?

Jeffrey,
Forgot to look today, but your backplate RAISED code would have been cast in 71 and the foil code most likely also 71.
I'll let you know if I have one.
