Contact Sanderson Headers in Inglewood CA.
They have been manufacturing header systems for over 50 years and their quality is top notch.
Their shorty headers are awesome and on their website you can see the dyno runs they did and compared their shorty headers with long tube headers and stock ram horns.
They ceramic coat the interior and exterior of their headers and they really reduce the under hood temperatures.
Their welds are so perfect they actually recommend bolting them up without gaskets.
I think they are the best quality headers on the market.
If you don’t like the idea of going to headers they also manufacture cast exhaust manifolds that many people swear by.
I also believe that you should install either a carb spacer or an oem type heat plate to help the problem.

I’m with Gkull on the wood spacer if it’s boiling fuel . Verify your timing is set right

I stopped the car, ate lunch, had a few beers, came out and the car when i started it said 230+. So I've got an underhood temp issue I'm trying to solve. Mind you I live in Ohio and it was an unusually hot day for us, 90+ degrees. I'll try to answer as many questions as I can:
  1. L48 mostly stock engine with an Edelbrock 1406 carb
  2. Yes there is a return fuel line.
  3. 16" electric fan mounted directly to the radiator, it moves alot of air.
  4. starter has no issues cranking the engine (typically the car will start almost immediately when I crank it)
  5. carb was devoid of fuel during this scenario
  6. Tested temps with my infrared thermometer and the gauge is correct.
I can see that the rams horns are 600+ degrees after driving for a bit and because of their shape I can't wrap them. Any suggestions on what to replace the rams horn exhaust manifolds with that will be just bolt ins? Not looking to rework my entire exhaust. Shorty headers or such?
I think you are missing most of the posters’ point. Reducing temps overall will reduce your at rest heat soak issue. If your car is running good temps on the highway, it can still be building excess heat; your cooling system is just able to deal with it with the airflow on the highway. The fact that the heat goes up when you park tells you this.
I read a lot, and I mean a LOT of overheating threads on these forums and there are two themes running through all of them.
1. These cars worked properly with the factory engineered cooling systems, so try getting as close to them as possible, and
2. Everyone who has a cooling problem seems to think they are smarter than the factory engineers and mods the hell out of the cooling system looking for answers. And usually not finding them.

Stop treating the symptoms and get to the root cause.
Several on here have mentioned timing as a huge contributor to excess engine heat, but I didn’t see where you addressed that.

Sorry if I came across as rude but I want (like pretty much everyone wants) you to get your problem solved and be enjoying your wheels instead of stressing about them.

Thanks. I'm not discounting the timing side of things. I have Lar's paper and will take a look this weekend. Was out of town last week and kids/life is in the way right now. I do appreciate everyone's input.
