Wipers stuck on '69
Further below is my original post from just yesterday. My wipers (primarily passenger side) were stuck slightly in the operating position. I Inadvertently hit the wiper control button and they started then stopped at 20% open. Was unable to gain any further movement. I reduced the blade length with the screw on the blade to be able to get the blades low enough to lower the vacuum operated wiper cover. All seemed well. Today I started the car, tested the wipers with the wiper switch (they were working fine prior to being stuck) and smoke started coming out from under the hood. Panic. Shut the car off and saw that the ground wire that attaches to a tab near the top of the wiper motor and runs through the sheath all the way to the heater fan motor (then grounds by the bellhousing). It was fried. The smoke was from the plastic which covered the wire , it completely burned off in just seconds. Question: What could possibly explain why the wire burned? If the wipers were 'trying to move' somehow but were either obstructed by the wiper cover (it opened all the way, it sure seemed) or the motor was on but not able to operate the wipers, would that cause this? You'd think the wiper fuse would have blown, but it's intact. I disconnected the 3-pronged main connector with the green, yellow and blue wires (see photo) as well as the ground for fear of a repeat. Can the car be driven with these disconnections without a problem? I have attached a photo showing the ground wire that fried (yellow arrow) and the tab it was connected to (red arrow, now covered with electrical tape). Just crazy! Would really appreciate any insight! I am not proficient with automotive electrical so layman's explanations would be greatly appreciated!
ORIGINAL POST:
Hello. My windshield wipers have worked fine for the past 2 years. But today I inadvertently hit the wiper button, the passenger blade came up about 20% of the way (driver side very slightly) and now I cannot get them to go back down or move. When I have the car key turned to ACC so I can check electrical functions I can hear a slight click in the wiper motor so it seems like the motor is getting power (fuse is good, btw) but does nothing. Now, of course, the wiper cover will not go down because the passenger wiper arm will not hit the safety switch to allow vacuum to work the cover. I don't want to break anything mechanical, but is there a way to manually lower the wiper arms without harming the motor itself? I also tried the manual wiper contrail **** below the dash and does not affect the wipers.
Thanks in advance for your help!
