When I got home from work this afternoon I saw an ominous drip of water coming from under my pickup (not the 'vette, thank goodness) I raised the hood to be greated by the pungent smell of coolant. I'm not too shocked since the truck has 130k miles on it, and I've never replaced it.
What I'm wondering is if I can use the long water pump I got with my ZZ4? The pickup is a 1994 Chevy 5.7, with a serpentine belt system. Just looking at the pumps, they look identical, but I know that there could be a problem with the directional rotation of the pumps. Anyone have any idea?
The long ZZ4 pump is std rotation ... clockwise ... same as crank. If your truck's pump turns same way then your probably home free. Otherwise it will not work. If a mismatch, call your Chevy/GMC dealer ... maybe they'll swap.
Smoke,
take a look at the blade pitch on the cooling fan in the truck, and in the Vette. If the blades are pitched the same way, then they turn the same direction and so do the pumps. I feel kinda dumb, not knowing which way the serpentine system on my own '92 GMC 5.7 turns the water pump... :bb Just never thought about it, I guess. But I sure do love that serpentine system! First time I ever changed a serp belt, and I swear it was less than 5 minutes from when I popped the hood to when I popped a beer... As compared to the hours and bloody knuckles involved in changing out all the belts on my A/C, smog-pumped Vette... :nonod:
Don't feel bad, I don't know either! Anyone out there got a Chevy pickup near by and can check? I guess I could check it out after I get home, but I'm going to stop at the parts store on the way home for coolant, I know those morons won't have a clue. If I don't find out anything definite I'll just pickup a rebuilt one while I'm there.
Well I pulled the water pump this evening and discovered it was just fine, the leak was from the right port gasket. The pump itself was tight and and actually in like new condition. I pulled the back cover to verify the rotation and it is the same as the ZZ4 pump. The ZZ4 pump will work just fine on my truck. The only difference is the ZZ4 pump has some extra tapped holes for mounting accessory brackets that the pickup doesn't need. So the new ZZ4 pump is going on my truck. I guess I'll keep the old pump for an emergency spare :D, or maybe I'll keep it for the next owner, you never know when 1994 Chevy 1/2 tons are going to start going up in value. The next owner might want the "Numbers Matching" water pump!
