Number of teeth on starter?
I just got my new AC Delco gear reduction race starter in the mail today. The gear has what appears to be 11 teeth on it, and my old one has 9. I'm pretty sure I have a 168 tooth flywheel w/ an 11" clutch.
Do gear reduction starters have a larger bendix gear?

Steve, I wish I could give you a definative answer. When I was looking for a new starter for my ZZ4, with a 153 tooth ring gear, I was finally convinced that you could nearly always tell if a starter was for a 153 tooth ring gear, if it had a straight across bolt pattern. 168 tooth starters were offset mounting. So I bought a starter that had straight across mounting, bolted it up and it works great.
I wish I could give you a better answer, there are many answers for the fun stuff, like which heads, cam, intake or headers, but ask about something mundane like about a starter and you won't find many people who know much about them. :D
Good Luck!

I'm pretty sure it's ok. I'll just give it a quick try, I don't think I can damage too much that way. The problem is with the Lakewodd bellhousing and block saver plate, I can't see the teeth engage. The only way to remove the dust shield is to remove the bellhousing.

Great! Which starter did you buy, I've been lusting after a GM gear reduction starter myself.

I'll IM you the place I got it from, as it's a non-supporting vendor. It was $120 for a genuine new Delco-Remy starter. A cheapo reman was $50 more locally, so I feel like I got a good deal.
