I now have 4 Elgin Stainless Steel BBC 1.72 roller rockers that do not spin freely and lock up when rotating.
I hear clicking in one. Another almost feels like flat spotted rollers.
Any one have a problem like this?
I can't believe it is dirt, my builder is very experienced and meticulous. Plus we couldn't even clean them out, even in the machine shop.
Defective parts?
Engine was run on the dyno for 10 pulls.
Since then it has sat for 2 years now.
Is that an issue?
Obviously, the bearings are trashed. I would not use any of them again. Comp stainless RR's seem to be the ones to use these days if your valve spring pressure requirement demand a roller rocker. If your over the nose spring pressure is under 350 pounds, you might not even need RR's.
I believe you are correct on the rollers. I am not sure but I think those may be import parts. Check with the vendor from where you purchased them and see if they can do anything for you if that is what you want.
I believe you are correct on them being import parts and lack of QC. We tried removing the c-clips and dissasembling them to see if the rollers had dirt when assembled, but they are pressed together. At least one feels like it is pressed together too tightly. We would have to make a special tool to reassemble the bearings properly, so will not bother.
Very disappointing.
I will be warrantying them.
I assume once they are rolling properly they will live a long time.
But it is disappointing that we have to double and triple check every little part we buy for these old classics, and only half of them are any good!
