Ok. I need Help , been a Shade tree Chevy guy for 50 yrs ( I’m 60) , built several hot rods , to many to remember , nova’s , Camaro’s c10’s , even some Corsair’s showed them all ( never found a vette I could afford ) anyway had a stoke , doc told wife to sell them all . Long story short , I haven’t really turned a wrench in 10 years , month ago Jr , says Dad , wish we woulda built a car together , kinda stuck in my throat , so I saved my my 300.00 a month my wife says is enough , so I saved , found a 1948 Chevy StyleMaster, Guy says cut ya a deal , 1,000 for the car 100.00 to deliver , 80 miles ) I got a deal frame off 4 way link rear suspension, mustang 2 rack and disc breaks , floors already done , any way I found a guy giving away a 327 ci said it had been in his garage for 30 years , ( I’ve even already bought a trans ) . So I went and got the 327 for free FREE , IM TRYING TO IIDENTIFY THE BLOCK . CM 3914660 appears never been planed as stamped number still in front of number 2 cylinder are TI 024EE , 18L316 I think 990 . Need help

Preliminary sleuthing shows it was cast and assembled at the Tonawanda engine plant (T) on October 24 (I024) for installation in an auto trans El Camino, Nova, or Chevelle. No Corvette small blocks were cast at Tonawanda, only big blocks. I didn't investigate the VIN sequence to ID the model intended for, but I believe the 8 in the VIN indicates 1968.

From the Lime Book (link in the forum stickies):

Does the block have the extra hole in the rear, for a road draft tube and a bolt on oil filter? If so it is going to be a small journal block. No draft tube, and spin on filter will be a large journal.

Chevrolet by the Numbers by Alan L. Colvin
Block casting 3914660 is identical with the 39114638 except for minor interior casting changes at the bottom of the cylinder bores for rod clearance. It was used interchangeably with the 3914636 in certain applications, but they are unverified at this time. Those applications which could have used this block are listed above. There was some evidence that this block was used prior to February 29, 1968 assembly date. Note: All applications have not been verified.

1968
Passenger / 327 / 250, 275 hp / 2-Bolt
Chevelle / 327 / 250, 275 hp / 2-Bolt
Chevy II / 327 / 275 hp / 2-Bolt
Camaro / 327 / 210, 275 hp / 2-Bolt
Corvette / 327 / 300 hp / 2-Bolt

What you have is a 1968 327 block with large main journals.

If that engine was out of a 1968 Corvette the pad would read FXXXXHE, HO, HP or HT.

Engine suffix code EE for 1968 is:
Chevy II / 327 / 275 hp / Powerglide
Chevelle / 327 / 275 hp / Powerglide
Camaro / 327 / 275 hp / Powerglide

What are the cylinder head casting numbers, I'm guessing 3917291.

Could you post a photo with scale and coverage similar to photo #3 in John Hinkley's article on small block production. (Link below)

I am curious about what appears (out of focus) to be a square plug on your motor's front.

Thanks. Mapman

Double roller chain is not a stock item. Lots of great help on here. I wish you well with your build! Best, Paul
