Hey all! A few months back I posted about the pretty horrific noises the engine on my ‘82 CFI had been making. At the time, the oil in the engine had 1200 miles on it, but I figured I’d change it just to see what happens, and surprisingly the noises went away. Unfortunately, 1700 miles on this new oil and it’s back what could this possibly mean? For context, the engine makes a terrible clacking or ticking noise for about 2 minutes on a cold startup, but smooths out eventually. Once the car is warm, the noise won’t appear if I turn off the engine and back on. I’m using valvoline vr1 10w30 oil and a wix oil filter. I’ll attach a video if it helps at all. Thanks everyone!
Clacking on start up means one or more of your lifters are bleeding off when sitting for awhile. Not totally unusual. But taking up to 2 minutes to refill is.
if this was my engine I would be replacing all those lifters with the best quality lifters you can find. And redo the cam breakin procedure.
as you remove all the old lifters check that they all spin freely.
