Default Muncie vs T10 shifter confusion

Most of my experience is with T5, T56, ZF6 and similar gear boxes. I've collected a bunch of parts for my '68 but I'm realizing that I might have been mislead on what parts "interchange".

So for starters. I have a '68 with an original Muncie.

I also have, sitting in the shop, a Super T-10 that came out of my 1980. It has a hurst competition plus shifter and linkage, which apparently is long since discontinued.

I learned that in '68 the shift forks attached with studs and nuts, whereas '69-74 apparently have threaded studs which use bolts. Therefore, the shift arms are NOT interchangeable between 68/69.

Originally I thought Muncie and Super T-10 used the same shifter and install kit, based on this link:

https://www.corvettecentral.com/c3-6...st-shifters%2f

Come to find out, this apparently is not the case.

Now what I am a little fuzzy about is the shifter bodies themselves. For example, I have two competition plus shifter bodies. One is marked "3915405e", which goes with my 1980 Super T-10. When looking this up in google, it appears it fits " Application: Fits Comp Plus 4 Speed Shifters: 3910028 for 1980-1981 Corvette with Borg Warner Super T10 Type 454 3917960 & 1963-1967 Corvette with Muncie Type 451"

So it fits a 1980-81 Super T-10 OR only a 63-67 muncie? Why?

Then I have another competition plus with no part number, we will call it the mystery shifter.

So this looks like the same basic shifter, but the arm for the reverse goes straight down instead of angling forward. Should I assume this shifter only works on a Muncie?

Buut then I was looking at some old photos from when I was building a second gen camaro of a few T10 transmissions and I found BOTH shifter designs on these T10's.

So I'm back to being confused again.

I'd like to use one of the comp plus shifters on my '68, with the Muncie. I'm fuzzy on which 'install kit' to get. I think maybe sorta this one: https://www.holley.com/products/driv.../parts/3734648

But I'm not sure if that will work with either of the shifter bodies I have, or a third one.

Which might be this one: https://www.holley.com/products/driv.../parts/3917992

Which gets even better, because in the description it says: "1968 Muncie M20, M21, M22 (451) transmissions - use installation kit 3734648 1969-1974 Muncie M20, M21, M22 (452/453) transmissions - use installation kit 3738611 1974-1979 Borg Warner/Richmond Super T-10 (454) transmissions - use installation kit 3738611"

So this shifter body works on both Muncie and super T-10? The photo appears to look like the shifter body I have with the straight down shift arm for reverse.

Oh.. lastly, why does the 1980 Hurt have this funky mounting bracket for the Super-T10

Why wouldn't it use the same mounting bracket as the Super T-10 in 74-79 ?

The tail housings have different bolt patterns. The '68 uses a different bolt pattern than the '70 and up tail housings so install kits vary. The '68 install kit does not work with newer Muncies because of the shifter arm attachment style. The shifters also have longer or shorter throws. There IS a reason they have so many kits.

If you want to use the '68 Muncie, start with the correct '68 install kit. You can try to use your shifters and see if they have the right throws, bolt up, and put the stick in the right location to fit the console. You might get lucky.

I have been down this rabbit hole before. Bottom line - sell what ever you don't need and obtain the correct pieces. Just a headache trying to mutt these things together just to end up doing it all over with the right parts.

All the shifter bodies have the bottom levers inline when out of gear. If the reverse shifter bottom lever is not "in line" with the other 2, its because the tranny is engaged in reverse gear.

That's not what I meant. This is a hurst shifter for an 80-81. Notice the arm for the reverse bends and goes way forward?
