Diff getting too hot?

Diff getting too hot?
I noticed the other day that my label on the plug that says something like use only GM posi additive or somthing melted off. Would this indicate that the rearend is getting too hot?
I wouldn't think it could take too much to melt the plastic :confused:

It's not terribly easy to see in this picture ( http://users.erols.com/jerryp58/corvette/temp/rear.jpg ), but do you have the differential & leaf spring heat shield mounted under the spring? It's just a flat piece of metal (it hooks onto the spring and screws into the strut rod bracket) that helps protect the spring & rear from the exhuast heat (assuming you don't have sidepipes).

That label is tough! I put it in a can of carb cleaner...and it came out fine -- even the printed lettering.
When was the last time you changed your diff fluid? (Or checked the fluid level for that matter?)

If your plastic tag that is located on the inspection plug on the side of the dirential is melting then you have serious problems, like others have said check the oil level it could be low, bearings running dry will get red hot and fail...

I just had a new diff installed last year sometime. I will check the fluid level ASAP. I hope nothing is damaged. I will sell it if the rear end is shot. Im not goign thru that expensive task again. :cheers:
Also I don't have the heat shield. Or at least Im not sure. I will check that too.

I will tell you a story. I did the evolution auto cross school. During this school you drive the living **** out of the car all day around this short course. The car did great. In fact the instuctors were faster in my car then they were in a new Z-06. Later I was under the car and noticed the tag was melted. Thought nothing of it.
Went to the Drag strip and promptly cracked the carrier in half.
What I decided was that I over heated the carrier and weakened it and then it cracked.

Would the exhaust have melted the tag?
I doubt it would melt the tag by itself, but I would think it'd cause the diff & spring to get much hotter than they should.
Have you had a chance to check the fluid?
Are you getting any "noises" or having any problems with the diff?
Even if you're not, I'd get the fluid changed (make sure they add the posi-additive) and buy or have someone fabricate a heat shield.
I hope it turns out OK; mines off the road right now awaiting a diff rebuild :(
