I’m having a tapping noise that sounds like loose rockers, checked the rockers and everything is fine and now I’ve narrowed it down to an exhaust leak from the middle two cylinders driver side. I replaced the exhaust gaskets at the headers and the block and the noise is still there, possibly a leak from the weld where the small piping on top of the manifold? I’m not sure what that is exactly but it’s all stock and it looks original. Can I weld it back together or do I need new headers?

Is it an 81 model ? If so, the factory hedders are SS as is the AIR tubing on top of the hedders.
tell me more about the AIR tubing.. what does it do? Can I take it out? Also, can I weld it back together or will it mess something up?
That AIR tubing is for the injection of clean air into the exhaust ports supposedly to aid in complete combustion (think cleaner tailpipe emissions) . The AIR pump was driven by the fan belt system, most likely your 81 has had all the pollution crap removed, and I see your AIR port is capped.
Dont go on my word but think I remember reading those headders are SS as well as the AIR tubing and if so welding shouldnt be a problem.
Car came into my shop w/ fairly loud exhaust leak on drivers side.... remove the exhaust manifold & found this: Doesn't appear to have been completely welded from the factory... plus a small crack as well...

that thing you're holding is a factory header, with the A.I.R. tubing attached. (AIR is air injection from the air pump driven by a fan belt- used to inject air into the exhaust in an effort to support complete combustion)
Bring that piece to a weld shop and have it welded up, a good welder can do that in 10 minutes. Its stainless steel and can be welded. Cheaper than any other fix.
