Default 1980 Hood Release Cable Casing

I have a 1980 that I am working through. Long story short, the hood release cable from the T-handle up to the DS latch, the cable housing is shredded. I just bought an entire new assembly.

I am guessing the cable in the new one will be stranded and not a solid wire as the original one is. Is the stranded cable the better option? Or, does it work to pull the old stranded cable out and replace with the solid original, will it "fit"?

The good news is I have the dash fully removed, so I am hoping snaking a new casing up through the firewall grommet won't be quite as challenging as some of the posts I have already read...and I busted off one of the weld nuts securing the bracket from inside the foot well, but at least I eventually got it out!

If you remove the firewall grommet and then run the cable / sheath through it, the job will be easier. Just be sure to run the cable / sheath through the grommet, after everything is secured goto the firewall and secure the grommet

The new hood release cable / T-handle I bought and installed about ten years ago on my '79 is a single solid wire. I didn't need to buy the entire assembly with bracket as my casing was fine. The T-handle detached from the cable. I don't know if I answered your question.

C3Highway,
Thanks, you sort of answered it. Your replacement came as a solid wire and that's what you're running with.

My wonder was if the new one comes with a stranded cable, is the stranded one believed to be better than the original solid wire. I'll have the new casing, but then I can make a decision on which type of wire-to-handle type to thread through....maybe.

I'll see what comes with the new complete setup I ordered. For all I know it'll also be a solid wire and I won't have the decision to make.

pmsjr,
I replaced both hood release cables on my car as they both gave up their spirit. The primary cable is a solid single steel wire. It has the T-handle on one end and cut off on the other end, so as to be affixed by your threaded brass stop to the left hood latch.

The cross-cable (to the right side hood latch) is a stranded steel wire, crimped on both ends and designed to accept a small clevis and cotterpin on each end to affix it..

I hope I'm helping.

Yeah, this is that solid core primary cable that I'm dealing with, with the T-handle. That's the casing that's shot. My crossover horizontal cable, which as you said is stranded, is already brand new.

New one should arrive tomorrow and I'll see what I'm dealing with.
