1969 corvette 427/390 numbers matching and I am rebuilding the dreaded Rochester quadrajet which as a kid we took off immediately for the easy to tune holly. Well I’m learning a lot but my question is I have a fuel filter with a return line back to the tank( pics included) but then also I found that it also has the stone filter in the carb inlet. Should I keep both or would that restrict the fuel to the carb when I get on it? I only took it from a hauler to the garage to repair a lot of things so I have not driven it yet.
thanks for your help
That's the wrong filter in the carburetor. That's for a Holley yours should be short paper. The external filter is correct but should have a metal line going in and out and the return line should also be metal.
When using the inline filter as the factory intended...remove the filter at the carb adapter. This is how it came from GM.......L-79 and L-46 with Q-Jet was the same way.
You could run it....but it is completely unnecessary....nothing is getting past the AC filter.....
On some cars, the paper filter with the check valve installed in the carb, can help with the fuel bowl siphoning back to the tank.
If you don't have this problem, I think that big external canister filter is more than adequete, though I doubt it really would be detramental.
Do you know the Q-Jet filter with check valve part #? I have the siphoning issue with my 454.
Drainback issues can be helped by using the full round seat for the needle....as opposed to the "windowed" seat......the windowed seat flows a little better....but the window is a lot lower in the bowl......the full round can't drain out as much.....

Yes the two lines coming from the tank are metal but they for some reason hooked this up with short pieces of rubber hose and also got rid of the bracket. Who knows what went on with the last owner 🤔

I wasn't referring to the lines from the tank. The original setup was a metal line 3/8" from pump to filter and second metal line from filter to carburetor. The small return spout on the fuel filter had a rubber hose, maybe 2" long, which then connected to a metal line 1/4" going down to frame return line with another short section of rubber to connect to it.
