Default 1969 Vent *****

Would anyone know the change over date for the vent ***** on the console. My car was built the end of Feb 1969 and I'm not sure if I need the chrome metal ones or the black ball shape plastic ones. Thanks again in advance to all you guys that have helped me out.

NCRS Judging Guide says "very late." First design ***** (68 and early 69) ran to about #14000 and said Vent/Vent.) 2nd design said "Vent/Open" and were used till very late in the model year. Looks like yours should be Vent/Open. Definitely not the black round one.

Just be careful when you pull the chrome one's back. They can hit your shifter plate and scratch the paint off. That is why GM changed them to the round ****. Lou.

THATS NOT CORRECT!! You are reading it incorrectly. Up to 14000 uses the chrome triangular rectangle and there are two designs of THAT style. After that with regard to the vent ***** it’s called the “very late” design which started after 14000ish and that is the BLACK **** style which is what the OP needs.

The JG reads “very late” design but that is very misleading. I am positive that changeover from chrome triangles to black round ***** occurred right around the end of January 1969.

Other published reference has it as well. In the Dobbins book on page 114 he shows car 14453 as states it has the round black and it occurred around about that time. On page 116 he shows car 14255 with the triangle/rectangle and on page 117 he shows car a “21000” (he doesn’t get more specific) with the black *****.

Ok So if that 14000 number is the last five of the serial number, then mine is18665 and would be the black ***** for sure. Thank you

FWIW...I got 33413...purchased in 1997...has the chrome triangles. Original? No way to know. Why would someone change from the round black ***** to the chrome ones...inconceivable why they would. unless black orbs broke and chrome is what the dealer had as service replacements. Which speaks to a big point of mine...there are trends and guidelines around originality...but a one off exception is always possible especially in a year of a union strike and associated parts disruption. So skip the points and awards games and be your own judge for your own car...how I roll anyway.
