MAD has a interior rearview mirror available. Does any one know about the quality and appearance of this mirror. I want to replace mine due to los of silvering on the backside, but want the replacement to look exactly like the original.
Widge, first thing you do is go to local; cheapie parts house and look for replacement glass...you will not find it the same size...choose one size larger...and then with hairdryer take your mirror apart...that rubber will relax under heat....carefully pull the glass out...and trace outline of it on the new replacement glass you bought....
take a belt sander...larger the better, and while someone keeps the belt wet with a windex bottle/water spray you grind down the edges of the new mirror to fit your old unit.....
i'ts that I did....ten bux and a little effort...take your time.....
I removed the glass from my mirror, brought it to a glass shop, had them cut me a duplicate of the glass. Installed it on the mirror. Only difference, the original glass is thicker on top end then on bottom( or vice versa).
Total cost of project: $5.00 for glass and a couple of drops of superglue.
71, that the whole thing....the glass from the parts house...or larger mirror stripped for it's glass is the day.nite reflective adjustable thing....just like original...and will fit nicely....IF ground down like above.....
My first job decades ago was in an olde tyme hardware store which did among other things....grind custom glass shapes....that's where I learned the technique....it's really easy with a belt sander and water spray....it's not like we are doing a huge table top here, just a POS glass....
thing is...the mirror shape is not found...and foreign repro mirrors are not of same quality....so redoing is the best option...IMO.....
I have already got the glass out using a heatgun just as you have suggested. And yes my goal is to maintain the day night functionality with a wedge shaped piece of glass. I'll check around for a suitable donar mirror. Thanks.
