Default Stalling

I have a 1980 L48 4 spd c3. The car idles good runs good but sometimes after hard acceleration it will start to run rough and stall out. After I let it sit it is fine again. Any ideas on why this would happen.?? Appreciate any advice!

It runs great under normal driving conditions. No issues at all until I really hammer on it. Then it starts to sputter like it’s not getting fuel then it will die. It’s then hard to start and I have a tough time keeping it running. Once it sits for 15 or 20 mins it starts right up and is back to running fine.

better.
a few things come to mind.

next time it happens, look down carb throat, front barrels, move throttle and look for streams of gas.
this could show if carb is out of gas.

when you accelerate hard, does it sputter right away? Is it a holley or a Quadrajet? If its a Holley your front float could be set high and you are flooding it as the fuel sloshes up into the vent. If it stalls after you come to a stop it would be low float level.

Is the engine temperature noticeably higher when it's running rough?

Is this car stock? If so....change the fuel filter and the "S" hose at the fuel pump supply line.....sounds like you are running out of fuel.

I think most of us are of the opinion that it is a fuel starvation problem, but this is what you need to do to be sure. Then you can start looking for the cause.

The car is stock. I will swap the fuel filter and check the carb next time it happens. I think you guys are right somehow it’s not getting fuel. I’ll keep you posted. Thanks for your help!!

I had a similar issue and it was my mechanical fuel pump. I would work well enough at idle and under normal acceleration. Whenever I punched it would stutter and then stall. Figured it out by watching the clear fuel filter while in neutral and someone punching the gas. Could see the filter go empty and then it stalled.
