When my car is running I can smell gas comming out my tailpipe. That leads me to believe that my carb is running rich and should be adjusted. My Q. is how do I know how much to adjust it? Do I just turn the fuel mixture down a little and hope that works? Or is the some kind of professional technique that would do the job better?
Thats alot of information for a guy like me to absorb. Looks like alot of really usfull info though. I should be able to make a more knowlegable adjustment to my carb now. Thanks. I should have checked there before posting.
A couple things come to mind. One is that you're just not use to the smell of a car without converters. The other is that there can be a lot of other reasons for excess unburned fuel in the exhaust besides a carb problem. A poorly tuned engine, low compression, valve problem, a big cam, etc., can cause this even with a perfect carb. As already suggested, start with adjusting idle mixture and go from there.
