I’m looking to replace my worn out, automatic shifter on my 1976 vette. A forum member happens to have one from a 1978, but most vendors list them as different part numbers.
Are there angle major differences between the two?
The difference is the length of the shifter, the 77-82 is about an inch taller.
Edit: I should have mentioned the reason the later shifters are taller is because the later shift consoles sit higher on the tunnel. If you look at a 77-82 Corvette the shifter doesn't look any taller then earlier ones because it's in a taller console. If you install one in an earlier Corvette it will stick up about an inch higher then your original shifter.
Volunteer Vette restores 68-82 automatic shifters. The price is $180, plus your old shifter or a $50 core charge. Their rebuilt shifters include a rechromed original handle, repainted base, new ****, button, springs and hardware.

Why do you think your shifter is "worn out"? I bought one on ebay about a year ago and it looked like crap but I cleaned it up and it works just fine. What is it that is worn?
