Just to be clear. With the engine running, all car doors closed, you turn on the wipers and nothing happens. You then open the drivers door and they work?

Sounds like a ground issue. the door switch connects aground when open so you must have a bad ground at the wiper and its seeking aground and finds the door switch.....thats going to be fun tracing
What is probably happening is that the wiper is grounding through the alarm system. Many years ago I had the same issue with my '69 that is equipped with the factory alarm. The wiper ground at the starter was broken. The wiper then used the path of least resistance which was through the alarm. On the '69 that is piggy backed to the wiper ground. When the door is open the alarm is grounded.
