Replacing parking brake on 1978 Corvette, Can not get the actuator out, slot in dust shield too small. The only way I see to get it out is to remove the dust shield. Which looks like I need to remove the hub. Can I just enlarge the hole in the dust shield to slide actuator out?
Yes, that’s the part. Driver side really rusty and not moving, passenger side a little better. Kit I bought includes everything so figured I’d replace instead of trying to free them up. With the hub there can’t get piece to pass through slot. The slot opening not big enough for for end where emergency brake cable to pass through the front or for piece to pass through the back. Wouldn’t mind replacing dust shield, but really don’t feel like pulling hub.

I have removed them thru the dust shield before. It was real tricky and you had to get it at the right position to pull thru.
I had the same issue and I tried and tried without success to pull it though the dust shield so I decided to wait for this winter when I plan to rebuild the trailing arms. So now Sigforty's response is going to make me go out there and give it a go again........
Will give it a try again. These are the original dust shields. After discovering that rotors were riveted to the hubs, wondering if this was an oversight, assembly easy but not disassembly.

It does not hurt to try again. I know I felt the same way when I did it years ago. Then it just slipped right in on me. What I remember was holding it up was the rivet in the middle. You just have to work that thru and you are good to go.

I do not think people think about servicablility and back then you were luck if a car went over 100,000 miles. The rivets where put in at the component factory and that way things did not fall apart in shipping. It makes it easier for the assembly line worker to put on as well.
Worked at it for half an hour. Not enough clearance. So decided to cut activator in half. Came out nice and easy. Turns out clip on underside but too rusted to see or take off. Hope new one goes in easier.
