4 speed :yesnod: . When I was shopping for my vette, the #1 thing on my list was a 4 speed. I refuse to buy any vette with an automatic unless it's a killer deal that I can't pass up. I couldn't really imagine not being able to rev it a bit at a light to hear those Flowmaster's, or dumping the clutch, or being able to hold a gear. For a daily driver though, I'd prefer an auto.

I would prefer a manual transmission because it is just more fun. The odds of finding a good manual Corvette are pretty bad for me. Took me two years just to find the one I've got. Beggers can't be choosers. Besides, I can always drive my dad's '64 for some manual fun.

Drag racing - Manual Transmission
Everyday Driving - Manual Transmission

Obviously, an automatic is better for the 1/4 mile....but it's just not fun. I can't see myself ever putting an automatic in my car. The closest I'll ever get to an automatic would be a Jerico clutchless 4 speed :).

So as you can see I prefer standard transmissions.

I spent almost 2 years searching for a 4-Spd, L-82. My wife said I was looking for the perfect specimen--and would never find it. I wanted a mint example of a C3 and "settled" for a great 82 . . . but everytime I back it out of the garage I'm sorry it's not a rock-crusher.

i know what you mean in a way...
my 3000GT is an auto and i shift the heck out of it...

(i drive an Oldsmobile Aurora as a driver tho ..)

anyway...to each his own...thats whats so wonderful about this life...we're not all the same...
i knew a guy once that told me "there is no bad music or good music...
its ALL bad or good to someone...we are all diferent...

A standard trans was the major requirement when we (my wife and I) were looking at vettes. We were looking at C4 six speeds when my '71 came along! My wife and I both enjoy driving a standard...besides, both of my Camaros are already automatics.

Aside from the performance advantages, sports cars are about driver control, therefore a manual transmission is must.

Auto or manual.... that´s a good question.
Since I got my driving license I drove with stick all the time, until my father bought his 95 C4 with a TH700R4.
I agree that shifting is part of the fun and keeps you active, but on the other hand a manual tranny is a little bit out of date. All new supersport and race cars have no clutch anymore. The use clutchless trannies and shift at the steering wheel (Ferrari 360 Modena), which gives you faster shifting times and more consistent clutch action. Missshifts are banned, and that´s a big factor when driving at the limit.
So my conclusion is:
A beefed up 4 speed, (5 speed would be even better) auto with a munaul pack and a ratched shifter
That´s as near as you can get to those high tech systems without spending a lot of money. Just my 2 cents.

I have driven manuals my whole life and although I know it goes against sportscar etiquite...I say auto! It's kinda nice not having to shift! :p:

I need to feel needed when I drive, so the manual is a must! I have found that the only thing better than my old 4 speed is my new 6 speed, it makes me feel really, really needed!

Double clutching with an occasional heel toe is therapy!

I protest! This is a trick question! I suspect a LOT of people aren't answering it correctly too. It says "what would we PREFER...not "what do we OWN".
While I would PREFER a stick shift, I OWN an automatic. Arhtritis in both knees prevents me from rowing around in a stick shift in anything but my scooter (I shift with my toes with that). However, the plus side of the auto is no missed shifts ;)

IMHO a sport car should have a manual tranny. It makes it more fun to drive :yesnod:

All I have ever driven in a manual. I love my 4 speed but whish it was a 5. I am not used to holding the revs that high. My wifes car is an automatic. I hate the responsiveness and find myself playing with the gas to shift when I want to. :steering:
